Statement

 Carlos Llobet Artist’s Statement

As a Costa Rican printmaker, I explore social and economic inequality, individual well-being, and the intersection of art and society. I draw inspiration from my childhood in Escazu, where the wealth gap was visible due to the quick gentrification of the area in the 80s and 90s.

My upbringing informs my themes, which center around the portrayal of life in the streets of San José, capturing the individuals who earn a living through informal jobs, such as lottery salespeople, shoe shiners, street musicians, and car watchmen. Through my art, I aim to foreground the economic struggles of the less fortunate in an increasingly unequal society.

In recent years, I have examined the expanding divide between the rich and the poor, tracing its roots back to the colonial history of Latin America. I seek to shed light on the working class of Costa Rica, a group of individuals burdened by the financial support of corrupt politicians and corporations while simultaneously being bombarded by media images of a lifestyle that is increasingly difficult to attain.

In my current practice, I use print media to create unique works of art that transcend traditional printmaking techniques. I incorporate collage, painting, and weaving of prints to explore the intrinsic characteristic of multiplicity in print media. By expanding the limits of printmaking, I aim to challenge its traditional size constraints and explore its potential for installations.

My recent series, "Lo que cargamos" (What we carry), explores the psychosomatic effects of stress and the physical manifestation of emotions within the body. The monoprints utilize plastic bags as symbolic objects to convey the emotional weight felt during the pandemic. Through this exploration of the body and its relation to stress, I examine the impact of external societal factors on individual well-being, drawing attention to the importance of mental health awareness and support during times of crisis.

My work serves as a platform for critical reflection and commentary on social and economic inequality, individual well-being, and the intersection of art and society. By focusing on the lives and experiences of those often marginalized and neglected, I aim to contribute to a more just and equitable society that values the dignity and worth of every individual, regardless of social status or economic background.

I create various sizes and present my prints in multiple formats, including installations and mixed media pieces. Through my use of printmaking and mixed media, I aim to challenge the boundaries of traditional print media and expand the possibilities for artistic expression.

I aim to create meaningful, thought-provoking art that inspires viewers to reflect on their experiences and perspectives.
